My sister-in-law pointed out this interesting video from yesterday's Today show about selective mutism. My four-year-old niece appears to have this challenge.
Update on the Mac situation.
We're learning to get along with each other, but I'm still finding everything taking considerably longer than it ought to! Part of that is that I'm so dependent on keyboard shortcuts, and I'm needing to re-learn them.

Thanks for posting that!! That means alot to me. So many people think we're weird if we mention it. Not to mention people who find her behavior "rude" when she "won't" say thank you or other proper answers. =)
I wonder if she would use sign language? If she could learn to sign "thank you", maybe it would be easier for her?
That is a possibility, but usually at school she cannot even point for her teacher. She points with her eyes. =(
