some gardens in Lansing

I went to visit a friend in Lansing yesterday, and we wandered around the gardens at MSU for a bit, and also the rose garden over by the river.

Thought I'd share some pictures!

attempts to protect the killdeer eggs

We have a great many killdeer who nest around the church. If you're not familiar with them, they're interesting birds! They nest on the ground, right out in the open -- usually among rocks or gravel. The parent birds absolutely freak out if you go near the nest, and they put on a big "wounded bird, come and get me" show to try and draw you away from the nest.

This year, we had a pair lay 4 eggs right outside the front door of the church. Our administrator found them, and has been trying to protect them until they hatch. This is vacation Bible school week, so that's a bigger job than one might think!

Thought I'd show you a few pictures!

Lastly -- note the kids' attempts to please mama-bird by sharing their Goldfish crackers. :)

Books from my class yesterday

We made two different types of books.

The turquoise one is a japanese binding, with hand-made paper cover.

The sunset colored one is a coptic binding. See the neat stitches that hold the covers & pages together?

It was tons of fun learning to do these! We tore the paper instead of cutting it, so it has kind of a raggedy, soft edge, which was fun.

See what you think!
